Poetry: In The Beginning

During the pandemic of this year, I've been writing a poem each day and posting it to Facebook. Most of my poems are celebrations of natural beauty; a few are ethical/political commentaries with some bite.

In The Beginning

In the beginning
the same day is entrusted to us all
but then what?
If we do not "rise and shine"
we may miss this transit
from darkness to light
and the rainbow-colored path
that connects them.

And if our heads are too full
of Big Ideas
or our hearts are weighed down
by the chiseled blocks
of old wounds
or yesterday's failures
we might overlook
how beauty yearns
to be beheld
and in some fashion
given back.

Birds of all feathers
know what to do
and save their sweetest songs
for dawn and dusk
what will you do with this day?

Sing as if
your life depended on it!
Give what you can
to those with empty cups
and when the opportunity arises
to give or receive a blessing
you know what to do
and have known
since the beginning...
