Quarantine Poetry: Minnesota Reset

During the pandemic of this year, I've been writing a poem each day and posting it to Facebook. Most of my poems are celebrations of natural beauty; a few are ethical/political commentaries with some bite.

Minnesota Reset

After a week or more posing as "Northern Nebraska"

the blistering heat gave way last night

to distant thunder, cool down-drafts

and morning air in the low 60's.

This is how Minnesota works

if you are lucky enough

to live near a large lake or river

whose temperature is cooler

than the surrounding air

and though we did not get the rain

we needed

and that green beings are begging for

it was a start

and best of all

we could open screened windows and doors last night

and let the Big AC

cool our homes

and soothe our crispy edges.

Some days everything seems to rhyme:

a longer than average drive

invites a soft, high, effortless 5 iron

leading to a 4-foot putt that dropped

spelling "birdie"

to confirm—

MINNESOTAO is back.
