Open Water

The Big River slows and flattens

becoming once again "Spirit Lake" (mni wak'áŋ)

"Eye of Heaven", Deep Peace of Earth-and-Sky.

Everything along this line is doubled:

limestone cliffs and hardwood forests,

dark green flames of pine,

now there are two:

above & below, actual & reflected.


When the heart-mind enters this serene horizon

differences fall away

where there were two, now just one:

clear light, open water

all the way home.
