Poetry: Refresher Course
During the last few years, I've been writing a poem each day and posting it on Facebook. Most of my poems are celebrations of natural beauty; a few are ethical/political commentaries with some bite.

Refresher Course

Just in case we thought
that spring had arrived in early March
we were sent a brief refresher course
on late winter
An inch or two of dazzling white snow
that once again restores
Zen landscapes in Minnesota
where nothing moves in straight lines
Even as we dust off seeds catalogs
and begin to polish golf clubs
we are sent back
into a zone of whiteness
to see if we can get quiet enough
to hear a south wind rattling the last oak leaves
and notice the tracks of rabbits and raccoons
who prowl our decks at night
looking for a late snack
It takes a mind of winter
to hear the pulse of spring
and feel a lively current
beneath a white and blue horizon of river ice
and in the veins and arteries of our dreams.
