Poetry: What the Leaves Said
During the last few years, I've been writing a poem each day and posting it on Facebook. Most of my poems are celebrations of natural beauty; a few are ethical/political commentaries with some bite.

What the Leaves Said

Do you remember in late April
when you watched us unfurl
our green banners
and praised us
for enlivening spring?
And then as summer swelter
came down like a hammer
and you were the anvil
our pale green canopy provided shade
and a measure of relief
while we joyfully converted
sunlight to plant power.
And all through the bright arc of our growing
we breathed with you
giving you oxygen
as we accepted your carbon
in a bond older
then either of us can remember.
Now is our time to blaze in glory
before we tumble through October air
and fall at the feet of the parent trees that raised us.
Come join us
in the Great Turning
that gives rise to new life.
